Storyboard Text

  • You will use this as a guide for creating a STEAL chart for a character. The chart will help you analyze a character in a novel or in a short story. Be sure to use quotes to support your conclusions.
  • Title & author and the character go in this cell.
  • Steal Chart Guide
  • S = What does the character say? What does he mean by what he says? How does he say it? What does that reveal about his personality?
  • Mrs. Smith says, "Michael, I respect that you worked with your group today when I know you don't feel well. Your group members appreciate that and I do, too." This shows that Mrs. Smith cares & respects her students. She appreciates the Michael's contributions to his group especially because he did not feel well.
  • The teacher thinks the students are motivated & more than capable of completing the digital comic project on their novel. This shows that she believes in her students and trusts that they will do a fantastic job.
  • T = What are the thoughts and feelings of the character? What does that reveal to the reader about who he is?
  • E = What effect does the character have on others? How do they react to him? What do they think and feel about him?
  • When the students see their teacher in the hallway, they smile and say, "Hi, Mrs. Smith! How was your weekend?" This shows that the students like & respect her.
  • Hi, Mrs. Smith, how was your weekend? Did you get to the game on Friday night?
  • A = Actions- What does the character do? How does he behave? What choices does he make?
  • The teacher spends many hours planning & grading over the weekend to provide enjoyable & interactive lessons for the students. In addition, she attends several sporting events to support the players she has in class. This shows that she cares about her students, wants to make school fun and wants them to succeed.
  • The smiling teacher is middle-aged with short brown hair and olive skin. She is wearing a red skirt with a pink blouse and black shoes. This reveals to the reader that she enjoys working with students, cares about her appearance and being a professional.
  • On the last slide, write a well-written paragraph bringing the main points and examples together for your character analysis.
  • L= What does the character look like? How does he dress? What does that reveal to the reader about him as a person?
