I shouldn't have acted the way I did when i found out Carl got a new car. I should be happy for him and his accomplishments.
Thomas asks a bunch of questions trying to guess what Carl is talking about instead of waiting for his answer. Tomas is using shotgunning by asking questions and he is fishing for information.
Scene 7: The Accusation
Thomas shuts down Carl's excitement by explaining to him that he can only afford the car due to his ascribed status. He was born with rich parents and he was always upper class.
Scene 8: Lesson Learnt the Hard Way
Thomas and Carl both want the conversation to be about themselves. They compete for the centre of attention. They are using conversational narcissism.
Scene 6: The Illusion

Thomas experiences regret from his actions. He is ashamed of his behaviour and there is no going back from his actions. He hurt his friend Carl and he wants to redeem himself.
We learn that social envy is very powerful. It can effect your personal life and relationships. It can possibly ruin connections with those closest to you.
Thomas reacts differently once his family appears. He hides his initial reaction from them. He uses dramaturgical analysis to present himself in the best possible way.
