  • Hamartia: The flaw that causes the downfall
  • Macbeth's major flaw is his ambition
  • Hubris: Extreme Pride
  • Macbeth's pride was in believing the witches prophecy was meant to benefit him
  • You cannot be killed by any man born of woman...
  • Peripeteia: Reversal of fortune
  • Malcolm turns on Macbeth and goes to war with him!
  • Anagnorisis: When the hero makes a critical discovery
  • Macbeth discovers that Macduff was born by c-section, and can therefore harm him!
  • Nemesis: Fate cannot be reversed
  • Macbeth and Macduff fight even though the he knows he could be killed by his opponent. Macduff succeeds in killing Macbeth.
  • Carthasis: Tone (Pity or Fear) the audience is left with after the hero's fall
  • Macbeth dies as a result of his greed in wanting the throne and changes from a respectable man to a hardened one, leaving the audience sad about his transformation.
