Storyboard Text

  • An ice cube does not have a lot of matter
  • Matter is something that takes up space and has mass
  • A rock has a lot of matter
  • Mass is the amount of matter in an object
  • Mass is measured with a triple beam balance
  • The unit to measure mass is grams
  • Weight is how much gravity is pressed against an object
  • Weight is the amount of gravity and mass is the amount of matter
  • weight is weighed using pounds and mass is weighed using grams
  • You use a ruler to measure regular objects and a beaker and or a graduated cylinder to measure the irregular volume of an object
  • Volume is the amount of space an object takes up
  • For regular objects, the unit of measurement is centimeter cubed and the irregular objects, the unit is millimeters
  • An ice cube has high density because it takes up less space and the atoms are tightly packed
  • A rock has low density because it takes up more space and the atoms are spread out
  • Density is how tightly an objects atoms are
