  • Reconstruction 1865-1877 -Reconstruction was a time of rebuilding after the civil war. -The 15th Amendment gave African Americans the right to vote. -African Americans held public office for the first time.
  • The push west 1862-1900 -A new gold strike in Montana pushes plains Indians from their homelands. -The civil war ends. Lincoln is assassinated and Johnson becomes president. -Custer makes his last stand at the Battle of Little Bighorn.
  • The newcomers 1865-1929 -The statue of liberty is dedicated in new York harbor. -The Chinese exclusion act severely limits immigration from china. -The Transcontinental railroad is completed mostly by Irish and Chinese immigrants. 
  • The era of Jim crow 1870-1954 -American Indians are finally considered citizens -The free men Bureau concludes most of its work in the south -The ku klux klan is started by embittered white southerners to use violence against blacks to limit their freedoms
  • From farm to factory 1870-1920 -The homestead strike is a dark moment in labor union history. -Andrew Carnegie buys his first steel mill in Pennsylvania. -Shocking photos of child laborers are printed in newspaper.
  • America on the move 1876-1920 -The first electric toaster makes it debut. -Soon other electric household appliances follow The wright brothers begin building airplanes for the U.S. military.
