Kansas and Nebraska will decide if they will or will not be a slave state for themselevs
Dred Scott Case
Dred Scott will not be a free man
In 1854 the Kansas-Nebraska Act declared that the people in the states would vote for whether or not slavery would be legal, contradicting the previous solution of splitting the U.S. by latitude. This resulted in people from out of state coming in to vote for what they want that state to be and showing the division between beliefs of the North and South.
Abraham Lincoln and the Republican Party
Bleeding Kansas was used to describe the violence that occurred when people were beginning to settle in Kansas because of everyone's different views on whether or not slavery should be allowed in Kansas. This shows how disorganized and violent people were which built tension leading up to the Civil War.
The Election of 1860
Dred Scott was a black man who lived free for many years but was forced into slavery because he had no rights as a black man which showed the effects of the growing conflict between North and South states on average people.
Abraham Lincoln was a Republican who thought that abolishing slavery would be too radical to do all at once however he did not want it to expand. This angered both the North and the South because it did not correspond with either of their views.
Our priority is to stop the further spread of slavery
