We're introduced to Mine. Loisel and her husband eating in the kitchen. She seems very glum because she thinks she doesn't have all the jewels and clothes she wants. The setting is in a middle-class home in the suburbs of France
Mine. Loisel receives an invitation from her husband to attend a formal event. She is devastated because she doesn't have the proper attire she wants to wear. Her husband agrees to give her Francs to pay for them.
Mine. Loisel borrows a beautiful necklace from her friend to wear to the ball. She dances and parties all night while her husband waits outside to let her have fun.
Mine. Loisel realizes once she gets home that the necklace is no longer around her neck! She frantically yells at her husband and he goes out and backtraces their steps looking. Unfortunately, they can't find it.
The Loisels buy a new diamond necklace to replace the borrowed one. They are in a severe debt after buying the new necklace. To pay off this debt they downgrade their lifestyle and work much harder than before. After ten years, the debt is gone.
Mahtilde is walking in the street and sees Mme. Forestier. She goes up to her and tells her about their endeavor. She replies, "Why, mine necklace was paste. It was worth at most 500 Francs!"
