" The Rock Pile " James Baldwin (1924-1987) Jennifer Santos 6th period 5-3-18
The main characters are John and Roy. John is Roy's older brother,he is very quiet throughout the story. Roy is a spoiled kid, he is spoiled by his father Gabriel.Their mother is Elizabeth. She is very overprotective over John. While Gabriel shows favoritism towards his other children.Delilah is Johns younger sister.
The two boys were in the fire escape and then Roy decided to disobey his mother. Roy went to play with the other boys ,on the rock pile. John is responsible for Roy, so told him not to go. Roy still went. He falls from the rock.
The main conflict occurs after Roy falls off the rock pile. Gabriel asks John where he was at the time that took place. He starts trying to blame John. Elizabeth jumps in and says its no ones fault but his own. He spoils Roy. They argue.
Roy is babied by Gabriel. And Elizabeth notices that he shows favoritism towards Roy. Gabriel blames John for what happened. Then Elizabeth comes in saying, "You ain't goin to take no strap to this boy, not today you aint." The confrontation begins then, it settles down when she gets quiet. Elizabeth tells John to pick up his father's lunch box.
The theme of the story is that the dangers of the inside , parallels with the dangers on the outside. The rock pile represents danger on the outside. In the home there is unfairness and violence for John this is the danger on the outside. This story made me feel sorry for John and i saw how this was a metaphor to the Harlem Times.
