Odysseus and his men approach the land of the cyclopes. Odysseus stands up to head out first and takes 12 of him strongest men to go with him to explore the land. They find the cyclopes gave and the men ask to take food but he says no.
They took a bit of cheese and waited for the cyclopes to come back. He asks who they are and Odysseus responds and says his ship is broken. Odysseus wants to kill the cyclopes so they can get away but they wouldn't be able to open the door.
The sun comes up and the cyclopes does his daily chores. They try to escape outside but the door is already closed. He starts to sharpen a stick and when he finished he hid it under a dung pile. He offered the cyclopes some wine and he drinks a couple more glasses. Odysseus grabs his spear and jams it into the the cyclopes eye.
The cyclopes tears the spear right out of his eye and asks why did they try to kill him and ruin him sleeping. The cyclopes calls for his other men but Odysseus says, "...nobody has played you foul..." (11) They get stuck again and wait till the morning to escape.
They take his sheep with them and escape. He yells to his crew to sail away but the cyclopes sends a wave to bring them ashore. His men protest and tell him to stop making the cyclopes angry.
