Bigger resides an a one bedroom apartment in South Side, Chicago with his two younger siblings and his mother. Initially as the story begins Bigger is described to have killed a rat aggressively.
Bigger has received a job to work for Mr. Dalton in doing so he has to drive Mary around as the job. Mary asks Bigger if he could take her to see Jan, a communist who is in fact her boyfriend. When he returns back to the house Mary is too intoxicated to go back to her room alone.
Bigger accidentally kills Mary because he fears of being caught in a white girls room since he would be fired or pressed chargers against. Mary's mom who is blind in both eyes walks in but doesn't discover Bigger is in the room as well or that her daughter has been murdered.
Authorities and reporters arrive at the Dalton's house to investigate the disappearance of Mary. Bigger put the body into the furnace several hours after he committed the murder. The ashes in the furnace begin to pile up causing smoke to be released and the police officer helps Bigger clean the ashes when he discovers a bone and a necklace belonging to Mary.
As Bigger is on the run he reaches out to his girlfriend Bessie who then becomes an acomplice with the murder of Mary. Although Bessie has gotten involved Bigger decides to kill Bessie because she begins to have second thoughts on the situatuon. He is too concerned with the idea of being caught that he believes this is the only way to be safe
After Bigger is caught and charged with the murder and rape of both Mary and Bessie. Jan gets Bigger a lawyer named Max who helps him go through the process of being sentenced. He later thanks him for all the work he has done for him despite everything. Bigger then dies...
