I've got to go to the hospital. Something happened to your grandfather. You stay here and sleep, I'll be back in a few hours.
A Night Without Sleep
I listened to my father go down the creaking steps. I lay awake until the sky starts to lose its darkness an the morning birds began their chatter.
I'm so sorry LuLu...
IT'S NOT FAIR!
Lucy's father gets a call from the hospital, telling him that things are getting worse for his dad. He doesn't want Lucy to worry so he tells her to stay at the house for now.
Lucy lay there awake at night thinking of all the events leading up to her grandfathers fall. Could she have prevented it? She was torturing herself with her own thoughts as she lay there worried.
Time To Head Home
Lucy found her dad at the kitchen table in the same spot he had been in the night before. At least his clothes were changed and he'd had a shower. Lucy's grandfather had died last night.
The service was beautiful, aside from all the tears it entailed. The priest was telling stories about my grandfather, none of which sounded like the man I got to know, Lucy was thinking during the service.
Lucy and her father said not even whisper on the car ride back home to New Jersey. She was still upset about her grandfathers death, and her dad was ready to talk about the stunt she pulled running up to Maine all alone.
