The humans had not gone extinct. In an enormous push for new technology, several thousand humans had managed to survive the nuclear dust long enough to move into a manufactured underground environment.
The Velupian tribe, startled and infuriated that they may have to share this world they found, declared war on the humans. Word quickly spread through the human's caves, along with a growing hatred towards those who had been assigned to protect the race.
Despite their efforts, the humans had grown weak from a century of living with chemically processed foods and artificial lighting, and the race quickly fell to the invaders.
Two of the few remaining strong humans - Camille Legaro and Joseph Plainton - felt an enormous guilt for not being able to protect the human race from the attack. When all hope was lost, they gave up fighting and were taken into custody by the Velupians.
Joseph still had some hope left - perhaps they could escape the Velupians and rebuild the human race. But Camille knew this was impractical. They endured various experiments for a week until Camille decided she would finally take action...
When the aliens weren't looking, Camille took an injection filled with chemicals and died shortly thereafter, abandoning the duty of the human race to survive and instead acting for the benefit of her sanity. Unable to bear the thought of being the last human on earth, Joseph followed suit.
