The Younger family lives in a very small rundown apartment in Chicago of 1950. The family of five shares a bathroom with other people living in the same apartment as them. Travis asks rut for 50 cents to buy his history book for school but Ruth refuses to give any. However, Walter hands him a dollar telling him to take a taxicab to school or buy some fruits with the extra 50 cents he received.

Karl Linder who represents the white community in Clybourne park, had offered money to not move into their new house that Mama bought for them.
