  • The French Revolution was a rebellion of french citizens who overthrew their king and became a republican government in 1789. 
  • Privateers 
  • Hiring privateers would violate U.S neutrality.
  • French citizens executed King Louis XVI on the Place de la Révolution  in  1793
  • Jay's Treaty
  •     The U.S will pay all the debt we owe to the British,
  • and the British will pay the damages done to U.S merchant ships. We will also leave the forts in the U.S.
  • The Neutrality Proclamation said that the United States would not take sides with any European countries.
  •     Private ships hired by a country to attack its enemies. France wanted to use American private ship's to attack Britain. Washington did not let this happen because it violated neutrality.
  • Jay's Treaty settled the disputes that had arisen between the US and Britain in the early 1790’s The British would pay damages on seized American ships and abandon forts on the northwestern frontier. The US would agree to pay debts it owed to the British.
