  • Rainsford, a renowned hunter, and Whitney were on the way to hunt jaguars, on a yacht leaving the Caribbean on a warm moonless night. They were discussing hunting and a sinister feeling always present in the vicinity of the nearing island. Whitney went to sleep and Rainsford decided to stay on the deck and have a smoke, when he heard a sound and went to investigate, but in the pitch dark night he, unfortunately, fell in the water. He began to swim towards the sound that he later recognized to be pistol shots.
  • Climax
  • He arrived at a island. On the beach there were clear signs of struggle, Rainsford guessed somebody had fought an animal. He began going deeper into the islands jungle, there he found a beautiful house illuminated from the inside. As soon as he entered he found himself face to face with a deaf and numb giant, Ivan. Luckily, a man who called himself General Zaroff greeted him politely and invited him in. Inside Rainsford was clad, and invited to a dinner with the General. Zaroff turned out to be a fellow hunter and a great fan of Rainsford's book on hunting. The general reveled had become bored of hunting usual animals as they were too easy to catch, so he resorted to hunting humans. Rainsford was naturally horrified by this and swore to expose Zaroff.
  • Falling action
  • Rainsford's first instinct was to make a complicated path and hide in a tree. He had managed to remain hidden in the tree long enough to get some sleep before Zaroff found him. Zaroff who enjoyed the hunt came to the tree where Rainsford was hiding and only looked up and smiled, then he left leaving him for another day's hunt. Rainsford swiftly left the tree and began searching the forest for ways of slowing down or even killing Zaroff. He soon found a dead tree propped up on a living one and with it he constructed a simple trap, investing all his effort. After he had finished he hid and waited for Zaroff to arrive. He did, but as soon as he triggered the trap, he managed to avoid it, and the falling tree only grazed him, so he left to nurse his wound.
  • Resolution
  • Rainsford began to move swiftly about the jungle until he stumbled upon a swamp. There he decided to dig a pit on the bottom of which he placed sharpened sticks, he then covered the pit up with leaves, branches and brush. As soon as he heard the sound of approaching footsteps he quickly hid behind a burnt tree. Rainsford was elated when heard the snap of branches - proving his trap had worked. Zaroff congratulated him and informed him that he had just killed one of his best hunting dogs and warned him that the next time he was returning with the entire pack.
  • Rainsford fell asleep there, only to be awoken by the sound of arriving hounds. Fleeing the area he come near a ledge and a river. There he saw the General with Ivan who was holding all the dogs on a leash. Rainsford quickly used his hunting knife and propped it against a young sapling as a spring. As he was running away he looked back and noticed that the knife had struck Ivan and killed him.
  • General Zaroff was having dinner back home, dismayed about his loss of a good man Ivan, thinking that he would be hard to replace him. He also lost Rainsford who escaped. He got tired and went to bed. Then, in the shadows, he saw a outline of a man. It was Rainsford. General wondered how he had managed to get there. Swimming. Now there were only the two men left, one of which would become the quarry, while the other one would sleep in the comfy luxurious bed. And Rainsford made a decision.
