The mayan religion originated in mesoamerica in 250 AD. The Olmecs played a large influence in their religion.
Under those circumstances they went to heaven. Science never interfered with religion. Mayan studied astronomy and time. Mayan cosmology thought that the world had been created 5 times and destroyed 4.
The Mayans worshiped numerous gods. The most important was Itzamna. The Mayan afterlife consisted of a voyage of the soul to the underworld. Everyone in the Mayan civilization went there unless you were sacrificed or died in childbirth.
The Mayans practiced astronomy along with human sacrifice, elaborate burials for royalty, and worshiping in stone temples. Victims of human sacrifice were painted blue in honor of the God Chaak. The sacrifices were usually done for a new ruler, or the creation of a new temple or ball court (ballislife).
Burial was different for social statuses, but Mayan royalty were buried in family crypts.
Today whats left of the Mayan people are located in Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, Honduras, and El Salvador. The Lancondon, one of the surviving tribes of the Maya, are thought to practice a variant of the Ancient Mayan religion.
