- Hello! My name is Magnus and I am 14 years old. My whole family and me are getting ready to head out on an adventure on the Oregon Trail! We are leaving very soon and I am really nervous.
- Dad said the wagon has already been filled with a lot of stuff that we need for the journey so I am only allowed to bring a few things from home like some of my school books and my favorite dolly. Mother is packing up some dry goods like flour, dried fruits and some meat we have preserved as well as a few of our most versatile cooking pans. We also get to bring my friend Agnus, yes, she is a cow who is a young momma so we can have fresh milk and butter.
- Sometimes the days were long and boring and other days we had to spend hours trying to get across a river or up a steep mountain. It was really hard when we went through really dry areas and had to breath in so much dirt.
- The days were very long and tiring but I looked forward to when we stopped and grandma would tell us some stories or work on our arithmetic with us. I really liked when we got to trading posts and could get some new supplies. There were so many interesting people there.
- When we got to the Trading Posts, we were usually so relieved. Our animals needed the break or new shoes, and we could usually get some fresh foods. I also could trade for new books. Some of the views we saw on our journey were amazing. I loved picking pretty flowers and would press them in books to dry them.
- The journey took our family 4 1/2 months but we made it. Father says now the real work begins as we start our new life her in in the west. I get to begin school as soon we get the land worked a little and get a winter crop planted. I/m looking forward to it!
