  • During the summer of 1791, some nobles and the queen persuaded Louis XVI to flee to leave Paris and escape to the border of Austria. The family was eventually caught and sentenced to arrest. That was a really bad move! They were forced back to Paris. Now his people believe that he is now a traitor. Louis' power shifted to the Revolutionaries and Louis loses his title of king.
  • On April 20, 1792, the Legislative Assembly led by a group known as Girondists, voted to declare was on Austria, which was allied with Prussia. This war was later called The Second Revolution, which overthrew the constitutional monarchy and established a republic.. 800 supporters were killed on each side. The French Revolution was created to replace Louis.
  • On August 10, 1792, a large crowd invaded the Tuileries, which forced Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette to take shelter in the Legislative Assembly. Many people were killed at this event including many Parisians and royal guards. The royal family were kept in prison and the kings political functions were suspended.
  • The Paris Commune compelled the Legislative Assembly to call for the election, of a new assembly. It was called the National Convention. The National convention declared France a republic.
  • We declare France a republic!
  • In December 1792, Louis XVI was put on trial. He was beheaded on January 21st, 1793. England was shocked to find out that the king was killed. France became isolated and at war with nearly everyone.
  • In April 1793, the Convention accepted a Committee of Public Safety charged with saving the revolution from enemies at home and abroad. The result was that it assumed quasi-dictatorial power and generally enjoyed a working political connection with the sans-culottes.
  • Let's establish a committee to defend France against its enemies!
