  • The Supreme Court case Hazlewood School District VS. Kuhlmeier was a combination freedom of speech, and freedom of press case, when the student editors decided they wanted to write real articles for their journalism class they went straight for the story, they published 2 articles one on Divorce and the other on a Teen Pregnancy.

  • Editor Cathy Kuhlmeier and reporters Leslie Smart and Leanne Tippett wrote an article on teen pregnancy where they interviewed three girls in their school who had been pregnant and their experiences they have faced since they became pregnant.

  • We will not allow this in our school.
  • They also wrote an article on divorce that included an interview where a girl classmate spoke about her parents' divorce where she blamed it on her dad for being out of town on "business" all the time and ignoring his family.
  • You are never home with your family!
  • When the news articles were sent to principal Robert Eugene Reynolds for approval he refused to allow the articles to print because he thought that even though the pregnant girl's names were changed it would not protect their identity, also he said that the talk of sexual activity and birth control was inappropriate for the students.
  • Principal Reynolds also believed that it was unfair to not allow the girls family to comment on the divorce interview, and to just discuss such controversial topics in a school newspaper. and then when they took it to the school board they were denied and told that they would not allow the articles to be published in the school paper.
