The Giver decides to end their afternoon by sharing a memory with Jonas about s a color-filled memory on a lake with blue-green water.
Jonas learns what world hunger is and feels sad and physical pain for the people who didn't eat at all. Afterwards he questions the Giver why he has to hold onto these memories, so he says "it gives you wisdom".
The Giver sits down to explain to Jonas that years before he was born the birth of children were restricted so therefore there wasn't enough food for everyone so many people starved.
Jonas, Lily, his mom, and dad are at the dinner table and his father the nurturer is talking about how tomorrow he will have to release Gabriel because he is not getting any better at the development stage.
Jonas and The Giver go to the Nurturing Center and Jonas see's his dad inject a newborn child that didn't go under the weight limit so he released it.
