Years before the scenes to follow: Oedipus was walking and killed a man on the side of the road and then married his widow, Jocasta. Years before that: Jocasta was given a prophecy that their child would kill her husband, Laius, so she left their new born on the side of the road in hopes of preventing this. Oedipus was that baby! DUN DUN DUN! So the prophecy came true but they do not know that yet. And ACTION...
King Oedipus, the plague will be lifted if the man who killed the former king, Laius, is brought to justice.
I shall find the man responsible and bring him to justice!
Oedipus is the killer
Jocasta (Oedipus's wife)
I don't believe you!
"And of the children, inmates of his home,He shall be proved the brother and the sire,Of her who bare him son and husband both,Co-partner, and assassin of his sire.Go in and ponder this, and if thou findThat I have missed the mark, henceforth declareI have no wit nor skill in prophecy." (444-461)
It is true Oedipus, it has been confirmed by servant and messenger you are the killer. You are my son and my husband.
When the truth is revealed: Jocasta hangs herself with their bed sheets and Oedipus stabs his eyes out before being exhiled. Before he leaves he tells his daughters: "Though I cannot behold you, I must weepIn thinking of the evil days to come,The slights and wrongs that men will put upon you.Where'er ye go to feast or festival,No merrymaking will it prove for you" Setting the scene for the next story Antigone.
