  • The Meeting of the Estates General was called by Louis XVI because of France’s financial crisis, or money problem. Representatives of all the estates came to the meeting to vote by order, meaning each estate only got one vote. It was unfair to the Third Estate because they were made up of over 90% of France. This event was a move towards democracy because they got together as a group and voted.
  • The Tennis Court Oath was taken mostly by the members of the Third Estate. They were supposed to be at the Meeting of the Estates General but they got locked out. They created the National Assembly. The members pledged to keep meeting until they wrote a new Constitution. The Constitution of 1791 created a limited monarchy, or took away some of the king’s power. This event was a move towards democracy because they made a new Constitution.
  • Napoleon got recognition because of his military success. He crowned himself as Emperor. After Napoleon leaves, many countries keep the reforms of the revolutions that he put in place. Napoleon put a lot of family or close friends in charge of the European countries. This event was a move towards democracy because Napoleon extended the rights of voting.
