  • People lived within 3 social classes. 2 estates enjoyed access to high office and exemptions from paying taxes. The 3rd estate represented 98% of the population and were peasants. The 3rd estate paid taxes.
  • National Assembly Formation
  • The 3rd estate was not happy and they were inspired by enlightenment thinkers. The cost of living was too high and the poorest people were paying taxes while the rich were paying nothing.
  • Revolution
  • Louis XVI inherited severe debt from the previous king who helped aid the Americans in defeating the British. He and his wife caused the country to go bankrupt.
  • Chaos in France
  • Austria and Prussia vs France
  • The 3rd estate decided to start their own voting group since they made up 98% of the population. The group was called "The National Assembly". This eliminated the power of the king. The formation of The National Assembly was the first deliberate action of the French Revolution
  • The National Assembly took over church land and sold it to pay off debt. This made church officials and peasants angry.
  • Austria and Prussia, seeking a western european ally, sought to reinstate the power of King Louis and threatened to wage war. France responded yes and went to war but France was ill-equipped.
