  • Alexander Fleming was born in Ayrshire, Scotland, on August 6, 1881 at a sheep farm.
  • He entered medical field in 1901 and studied at St. Mary's Medical school in London.
  • In World War One Fleming served in the Army Medical Corps. After the war, he returned to St Mary's.
  • In 1928, whilst studying influenza Flemming noticed that mould had formed a bacteria-free circle around itself.
  • Florey and Chain further developed Penicillin so that is could be produced as a drug. By 1940 it was being mass produced by the American drugs industry.

  • Ernst Chain
  • Fleming wrote many papers on bacteriology, immunology and chemotherapy. In 1945 Fleming, Florey and Chain shared the Nobel prize in Medicine.
