  • Jackie is a hardworking Spanish mother in an impoverished community trying to raise her daughter, Cassie, as best as she could. In this interaction, Jackie says, "Goodbye daughter! Have a good day at school!", while Cassie responds, "Bye Mother!" in Spanish.

  • Cassie, who is an ELL, is overwhelmed with the English-dominant classroom. Most of the other students are ELLs as well-with Spanish being their prominent language-but that does not stop the teacher from continuing her instruction and classroom environment in English. As a result, Cassie's school work is impacted negatively and she disengages from her English-dominant classmates.

  • Cassie is exposed to nothing but her dominant language-Spanish- at home. This hinders her ability to learn the English language. Her mother realizes that Cassie has been coming home upset everyday. Cassie then confides to her mother about why she has been upset-mainly due to the uncomforting atmosphere she is exposed to in Mrs. Smith's class because everything is in English. This only impacts her self-esteem too because of her lack of knowledge of the English language.

  • Mrs. Smith is notified by the principal that Jackie, Cassie's mom, called and told her about how Cassie feels about attending class everyday and how the classroom and environment is not so accommodating to not just Cassie's needs/skills but other students' as well.
  • Mrs. Smith was able to make her classroom and overall environment more accommodating to her diverse students. Mrs. Smith made the mistake of not taking her students' individual and cultural backgrounds into consideration when providing instruction and constructing her classroom. Now that she has changed this-her students will only be positively impacted!
