Nathaniel Wallich was born with the name Nathan ben Wulff, in Copenhagen, Denmark in 1786
He started University at 15 studying veterinary medicine and botany before transferring to a medical program. In 1806 he graduated and became a surgeon.
When Nathaniel was 20, he traveled to India. He lived and worked in South East Asia until he was 61 years old.
While in India, Nathaniel worked as a botanist, studying and cataloging hundreds of plants. He would send samples back to England for further study.
Over his lifetime, Nathaniel collected more than 20,000 plant species known as the Wallich Catalogue. This collection is part of the Royal Botanical Gardens in London. Nathaniel died in 1847, 7 years after he returned to London from South East Asia.
Nathaniel Wallich is actually Miss Daigneault's Great-Great-Great-Great- Great-Great-Grandfather!
