Adhesion is a property of water. The property of adhesion states that water molecules will stick to other non-water molecules. Adhesion is commonly mixed up with cohesion which is when water sticks to itself.

other non-water molecule
We can see this by dipping a piece of paper towel in water
When we dip the paper towel into the water the water slowly creeps up the paper towel because is sticks to the other molecules of the paper towel.
Water will stick to other non-water molecules due to adhesion.
The water in the experiment stuck to the molecules of paper and climbed up the paper.
This climb of water up the paper proves that the water molecules actively stick to other non-water molecules.
