Defendent, Clarence Earl Gideon was accused of breaking into a Florida pool hall and stealing some beverages along with $5 in cash.
I plead for a laywer! It's my 6th Amendment right!
Yes! I'm a free man! Good work Mr. Turner!
Gideon asked the court to appoint him a lawyer, but the court said no.
Gideon worked hard to prove his innocence, but it wasn't enough. Eventually, he was deemed guilty and sentenced for five years in prison.
Yes! The Supreme Court agreed with me! Now all state courts shall let the accused have the right to an appointed lawyer. Now I can re-do my trial!
While in prison, Gideon petitioned the Supreme Court about his case, and the Supreme Court agreed.
Gideon's case went back to a lower court. This time, with the help of a lawyer, he was proved innocent!
You are welcome sir.
