Shmuel is a Jewish kid who was sent with his brother to the Auschwitz camp. Shmuel was born on the exact same date as Bruno (13 years old). Shmuel kind of plays a big role when introduced in the story. The role that he kind of plays is a conflicting role for Bruno as he soon finds out his Father's true purpose on what he does. Shmuel at one point, takes Bruno under the gate to the camp in order to have his same experience, which makes Shmuel feel so happy to really see him face to face up close without the gate.
"Bruno was sure that he had never seen a skinnier or sadder boy in his life but decided that he had better talk to him."
