  • Willy Loman is the tragic hero. He has a tragic flaw/downfall.
  • Peripeteia
  • Willy Lowman's hamartia is that he has excessive pride and is living in a fantasy.
  • Anagnorisis
  • He shows this excessive pride by never owning up to the fact that it is his fault his sons are the way that they are. Also he never received the job that charley offers him.
  • Catharsis
  • After realizing that his sons are not successful and his life isn't or will never be the American dream he wanted, Willy's reversal of fortune occurs. He starts to have flashbacks, car accidents, and inhales gas to kill himself. He gets fired and Biff finally tells Willy it's his fault.
  • Willy experiences a small sense of self-discovery at the end when he tries to get seeds and plant vegetables, simultaneously repeating that he has nothing in the ground. This exemplifies that he realizes he has failed in life.
  • The audience is emotionally moved at the end when Willy kills himself. Even though Willy was not perfect he is still human. The audience, being human, realizes that no one is perfect and feels pity.
