This is Symbolic of the black box. It symbolizes how the black box leads to death. Anyone subjected to the black box has a chance of being killed by people closest to them. the box itself is death.
Tone and Theme
This Imagery is when the villagers found out that the one who had the black dot was Tessie. As said on page 34 line 128-129 Tessie said "This isn't fair it isn't right , Mrs Hutchinson screamed, then they where upon her. " this quote states how the village was after her after finding out who had the black dot
This box represents the Figurative Language used by Mr Summers when he said "Lottery in June corn be heavy soon." This is an example of Deux ex mancarta. This is when a character arrives and offers a solution to a situation or problem.
This box represents how Tessy was argumentative and against the fact that she picked the paper with the black dot. This sets the tone of the story by being suspenseful because at the time the reader is still unsure and don't know what happens if you choose the black dot . A theme of this scene and the overall tone of the book is you don't know what will happen next or to the person.
