  • You guys can have this free land if you live here for 5 years.
  • Louisiana Purchase
  • Mexican Cession
  • President Abraham Lincoln’s signing of the Homestead Act granted Americans 160-acre plots of public land for free but they have to live there for 5 years.
  • Oregon Territory
  • Napoleon Bonaparte of France needed to fund his army warring in Europe. Louisiana was no value to him, so when Jefferson inquired to purchasing the city of New Orleans, Napoleon offered the whole territory. This purchase doubled the size of the U.S.
  • Texas Annexation
  • The Americans wanted to expand their land territory across the entire North America continent. The war started in April 25, 1846 in the Rio Grande. War ended with The Treaty of Villa de Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848.
  • Creation of the Transcontinental Railroad/Gadsden Purchase
  • The Oregon Territory was a debate raged over where the boundary lay between British Canada and the U.S., Whether is should exist at 54 degrees, 40 minutes or the 49 parallel. The border was compromised at the 48th parallel.
  • Texas had been a part of Mexico but in that year a group of settlers from the United States who lived in Mexican Texas declared independence. They then started the Mexican- American War. The war ended with The Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo in 1848.
  • This was a purchase of a small strip of land from Mexico just below the previously acquired Mexican Cession for $10 million. Railroaders needed this land to continue a good railroad route to the Pacific Ocean. This completed the vision of Manifest Destiny.
