  • George Washington was the first president of the U.S. He set the precedent for for future presidents.
  • Whiskey Rebellion
  • American was $52 million in debt (mostly in the form of bonds) and was not making enough money to pay it back in a timely manner.
  • Problems in NW Territory
  • ...And we can give you rifles.
  • Alexander Hamilton came up with a three-part plan to get America out of its debt. Parts one and two were passed, but three was not. In the end, the plan worked.
  • French Revolution
  • This isn't right. We need to make France a better place.
  • Farmers held an armed rebellion against a tax put on all whiskey made and sold in the U.S. In response, Washington sent a militia to stop the uprising. This event made it clear that armed rebellions would not be tolerated.
  • Despite promises to withdraw their troops within a reasonable time, British soldiers were still in the NW Territory a decade later, and were supplying Native Americans with weapons to use against the Americans.
  • Starting in April 1789,  it was the result of a financial crisis, economic depression, and enlightenment ideas. Americans supported it until it became excessively violent.
