When lunchtime arrived, Miss Caroline asked students to raise their hands if they went into town or home to eat. She then asked the rest of the students to place their lunches on their desks so she could inspect them. When Walter Cunningham didn't produce a lunch she questioned him about it.
"Miss Caroline, he's a Cunningham. The Cunninghams never took anything they can't pay back, no church baskets and no scrip stamps. They never took anything off of anybody, they get along on what they have. You're shamin' him, Miss Caroline. Walter hasn't got a quarter at home to bring you, and you can't use any stovewood."
Miss Caroline did not understand Maycomb's people or their ways. Scout was just trying to explain the situation, but Miss Caroline thought she was picking on Walter. The Cunnighams are poor, but they are respected. They will pay their debts, just in different ways instead of using money.
