Jerome is the protagonist of this short story. Jerome's father outer characterization simply represents him as a writer or a widower. Jerome's aunt is his father's sister
Jerome was called into the house master's room on thursday morning to receive the news about his father
Mr. Wordsworth was so nervous about telling how his father died because it was hard news he told jerome that his father was in a accident he thought his father was wounded in a hail machine gun he finally told him a pig fell on his father
Jerome was happy because Sally his fiance showed him support that he needed. She had appeased his fear for ever, and Jerome loved Sally for that support and love she had for him.
The theme of this story is if someone really loves you they won't care about your embarrassments like Sally did with Jerome when he told her about his father's death. My personal reaction was comical at first but it changed when he told people about his fathers death. Although he was embarrassed to tell other people he wasn't to embarrassed to tell Sally.
