  • In 1946 Eugene Talmadge won the Democratic position to be governor for the fourth time. However, Talmadge was not healthy, and his close friends began to fear that he would not live until the inauguration in January 1947.
  • Oh no what terrible news.
  • Bad News
  • I'm sorry to say Mr. Talmadge, but you do not have a long time to live.
  • Eugene Talmadge died in December 1946. right after, the General Assembly had a meeting in January 1947 about who was going to fill the empty governor seat.
  • RIP
  • Whyyy Eugene Whyyy?
  • Noooooo
  • As the legislature was electing Herman Talmadge (Eugene Talmage's son) as governor, Melvin E. Thompson was preparing a court fight to stop Talmadge's election. Ellis Arnall, the former governor of Georgia, announced that he would not give up the office until he knew who the new governor would be. He wanted Melvin E. Thomson to become the governor.
  • Oh my goodness please calm down, we will figure something out!
  • I will not allow this election to go any farther! Thompson should become the governor!
  • He's Right!
  • On January 15, the day of the election, both Herman Talmadge and Ellis Arnall claimed to be governor of Georgia and shared the same offices in the capitol. By the next day Talmadge took control of the governor's office and had the locks on the doors changed.
  • Herman Talmage
  • Yes! Finally I've gotten Thompson out of my office. Luckily i changed all the locks so cant get in now. Ha Ha
  • Arnall  wanted to continue his position as governor and even set up his own governor's office because he couldn't get into the real one. After a few days Arnall gave up his claim as governor and supported Thompson.
  • I will not let that fool stand in my way of being governor unless there is someone proper to do the job.
  • Ellis Arnall
  • in the end the justices ruled that Thompson would be the governor until a special election could be held to decide the remainder of the original term, which would be from 1947 to 1951. Herman Talmadge won easily over Thompson with the help of his supporters in 1948.
  • Hip Hip Hurray!!
  • ...And the next mayor of Georgia will be Herman Talmadge!
  • Aww man!
