Hello everyone! My name is Jared. I am a fifth grade classroom teacher at an elementary school in the Lower Mainland.
I really enjoy being a classroom teacher, but I am looking to diversify my teaching practices and it seems like the Teacher Librarian program through Queens is a prime opportunity to do so. Who knows? Maybe someday down the road I will be a teacher-librarian.
I actually worked at a public library for seven years between my days in high school and university. I have always enjoyed reading and spending time in a library.
I think one of my greatest attributes or strengths is being able to engage some students in reading. During read alouds to my class, I can get quite dramatic and theatrical and the kids love that.
On occasion, my dramatic reading of a novel from a series has compelled a child to check out other titles from that particular book series. It has also inspired students to read more dramatically like me when my class does reader's theatre throughout the year.
Like our instructor, I also enjoy traveling. I have been all over Europe and the United States. This past summer I visited Pittsburgh, Cleveland, and Detroit. I think my favourite U.S. city is Chicago, but I also really enjoyed my visits to New York, Boston, and Philadelphia.
In my spare time I like to play ice hockey. I play twice a week. Usually when I am on the ice, however, I am wearing a helmet, gloves, hockey pads, and skates. I guess I forgot my gear on this occasion.
I look forward to meeting and working with you all in this course. See you all online!
