In P.T.I by Sherman Alexie, an important message is that alcoholism can lead to pain and death to the user and everyone around him/her.
Dad is sober!!!!!!
"[During Christmas] He[Dad] ran away with little money we had and ran away to get drunk... 'it's okay,' I said. But it wasn't okay. It was about as far away from okay as you can get"(Alexie 150-151).
"They had a big party,' my father said, 'and your sister and her husband passed out in the back bedroom...the trailer burned down quick... the police say your sister never even woke up... she was way too drunk"(Alexie 205).
I'm sorry son, but your sister's not with us anymore.
"It was a good day. Dad was sober"(Alexie 102). Alcoholism is endemic to Native Americans and it is rare to see a Native American without a bottle in their hands so Junior is celebrating that he doesn't have to have his father leave for awhile or drink a bunch.
Junior is upset because alcohol ruined his Christmas. Even though his dad remembered to get him a sort of gift(5 bucks), it was terrible because his dad was gone for over a week, making it the worst Christmas ever for Junior.
Junior's sister died because of alcohol. If she hadn't drinking so much she would still be alive and Junior wouldn't even be more hurt. Alcohol in his family has killed his grandmother, sister, family friend Eugene and is ruining his dad's life. Alcohol hasn't just killed the users, it kills other people on the inside who watch.
