In the beginning of the novel, the narrator (Doodle's brother), Doodle (William),and the parents were introduced. The narrator has mentioned he had wanted an older brother, and when he got one, he was unique.
Once Doodle was born, the brother noticed he was different. The older brother taught Doodle how to walk. They see a red scarlet ibis that just falls out of a tree and dies. Aunt Nicey has mentioned that this is bad luck.
There is a big storm and Doodle can't keep up with his older brother. It was raining and Doodle has pushed himself to his own limit.

Doodle's brother doesn't see Doodle in sight. The narrator calls Doodle's name, but he doesn't answer. He goes back to look for Doodle and see's he is curled up in a bush like the red scarlet ibis.
The narrator finally finds out that Doodle has passed. He feels extremely bad and starts to cry.
