The guards on night watch at the royal castle in Elsinore have seen the ghost of Hamlets father. The men decide to tell Hamlet.
Act 1 Scene 4
In this scene Claudius explains why he has married Gertrude. He tries to make a friendship with Hamlet, but he doesn't want to. Hamlet remains sullen and hostile. In this scene we see the first soliloquy, which Hamlet pronounces to the audience.
Act 1 Scene 5
Laertes and Ophelia exchange farewells before Laertes leaves for France. Laertes warns Ophelia to not take what Hamlet says seriously. Polonius also warns Ophelia about Hamlet and orders to not see him again.
The ghost appears to Hamlet and wants to speak to him alone. Horatio and Marcellus try to stop him, but he still goes with the ghost.
The ghost, appeared as Hamlets' dead father, tells him that Claudius murdered him by poisoning him and wants him to get revenge on his brother, Claudius, where Hamlet accepts the task of taking revenge on Claudius but not harming Gertrude. Hamlet refuses to tell Horatio and Marcellus about everything.
