According to the maori legend, the world as we know it was formed when Tane Mahuta, the god of the forest, unattatching Ranginui father of the sky, and papatuanuku the mother of the earth.
Tane Mahuta went to the gods convincing them that they should create a woman, who then on have children. The gods agreed, so Tane Mahuta got the red earth from the gods and shaped it into a woman.
Tawhiri Matea, the god of winds, he whispered to hineahuone, "take my breathe for you have the gift of life. hineahuone moved her body and coughed. She was gifted with all nature and to live on earth.
Together the gods gave her the gift of life. The tribes were amazed for hineheahuone was welcomed and the traditional maori people had pressed noses to each other doing a hongi.
