  • The Mayflower landed in Plymouth Plantation in 1620.
  • Life was difficult for the Pilgrims. More than half died during their first winter.
  • Squanto, a Native American, taught the Pilgrims to hunt, fish, and grow crops.
  • Because of Squanto, the Pilgrims were able to grow and store enough food for the next winter. The Pilgrims were thankful!
  • The Pilgrims and Native Americans celebrated with a feast that lasted for 3 days. It was the first Thanksgiving.
  • President Lincoln declared Thanksgiving a national holiday. It is now celebrated on the 4th Thursday in November.
