  • Miguel's "Coming of Age" in La Linea
  • Miguel tells Elena that he is going to California and she has to stay.
  • Elena disguises herself as an india and gets on the bus with Miguel.  Miguel blames her for getting them in trouble with Morales.
  • Immature to Mature
  • Miguel and Elena are robbed.  Elena has hidden some money!
  • "I didn't want to be the one to tell Elena.......Nothing I could say would stop it-except to say I'd take her with me.  And that was not going to happen." (p. 5) Early in the story, Miguel is selfishly thinking only about himself.  He considers Elena a kid who would only slow him down on his journey.

  • "My plan-Don Clemente's carefully laid plan-was in ruins.  And Elena was to blame." (p. 41) Miguel is still only thinking about himself.  He doesn't understand how Elena must feel about wanting to go North with him.

  • "I looked at my sister hard.  Despite everything she'd done wrong, she'd won my admiration." (p. 59) Miguel starts to understand that his sister is stronger than he realizes.  Even though she volunteers to return to San Jacinto, he know agrees that they should go North together.
