  • Step 1: Thank the parent for their time.
  • Of course! I am happy to take the time to meet with you, Mr. Quin-ghly. 
  • Thank you so much for coming, Mrs. Z! I know how busy you are!
  • Step 2: Compliment 1-2 of the child's positive behaviors
  • I want to start by saying how wonderful it is having Maria in class.  She seems to work so hard on her homework, and earns phenomenal grades!
  • Thank you so much! We are very proud of her! She takes after me with those study habits!... So, what's going on?
  • Step 3: Inform the parent of the child's concerning behaviors
  • Maria has been having some behavioral problems in class.  She has been talking over me and interrupting other students frequently. We need to work together to solve this. 
  • Gasp! That doesn't sound like my sweet Maria.  She must get that from her father. Thank you for telling me.  What should we do?
  • Step 4: Ask parents for their insights about the child, and align your interests.
  • Well, you know Maria better than I do.  Have there been any changes in her behavior at home? Can you think of anything that would be affecting her emotionally? 
  • Wow, I appreciate you recognizing that.  Actually, she has been having a hard time with...
  • Step 5: Find out what they have tried at home.
  • Thank you for opening up about her home life.  What techniques have worked in the past at home to help improve her behavior? Could we try them in class?
  • Well, when she is disrespectful at home, we usually...
  • Step 6: Create an actionable plan, including a plan for following up
  • That sounds wonderful, Mr. Quin-ghly.  Thank you very much for helping our daughter grow! We will talk soon!
