  • The protagonist of " The Lottery " is Tessie Hutchinson. She is the mother figure of the Hutchinson family. "'It wasn't fair," Tessie said.'
  • The antagonist of the short story is the rest of the Hutchinson family. The Hutchinson children are named Bill, Jr., Nancy, and Dave. Nancy has supporters in the crowd who openly express hope that she's not the one chosen. "'There's Bill, Jr., and Nancy, and little Dave. And Tessie and me.'"
  • The conflict of " The Lottery " is that Tessie Hutchinson has the paper with the black dot in it which means she is the chosen one to be stoned to death. "' It's Tessie,' Mr. Summers said,"
