Daniel Jae Ho Bae is a Korean-American boy who is always the good child, living up to his parents high expectations. Natasha Kingsly, on the other hand, is a Jamaican- American girl who is being deported.
Daniel is on his way to an interview for Yale when he sees people surrounding Natasha who is listening to music on her big headphones.
Daniel I have to tell you something. I am being deported today.
Natasha walks into a record store, when Daniel follows her. Both see Natasha's ex-boyfriend steal something. Finally Daniel starts talking to Natasha. After leaving the record store, Daniel starts following Natasha again. Daniel saves Natasha from a car that is about to hit her. They start becoming closer.

They go to lunch together and spend the whole day together and learn a lot about each other. Slowly, they fall in love. She meets Daniels brother, Charlie and his dad and learn that they aren't very nice people. Natasha is about to take him to her favorite part of New York, the art museum, when something happens.

She tells him that she is being deported. They start arguing and get mad at each other. They go their own ways.
Jeremy Fitzgerald, Natasha's lawyer who also has an affair with his paralegal, gives Natasha hope that he might be able to help her. Natasha gets happy and tries to find Daniel to share the exciting moment.
