This was when Maya and Bailey at the ages of 3 and 4 first moved to Stamps to live with their grandma and Uncle Willie at their well known store.
What's going on in this picture is when the " powhitetrash" children came to the store and began making fun of Momma. While Maya was behind the door she could hear and see it all and she was imagining her shooting them with the shot gun but then noticed her grandma stayed completely silent and then walked back in the house with a winning type of look on her face.
This photo shows the part of the book when their father who they thought died came and stayed for a few weeks then decided he wanted to take them with him. Maya wasn't to happy but her brother was so she went because she thought she wouldn't be able to live without Bailey by her side.
This is the part of the book when they thought they were on the way to there dad's house but halfway there their father told them that he was taking them to their mothers house and both Maya and Bailey were mad about that but as Maya said it was to late to turn back.
This scene shows how I imagined it looking in my head before Mr.Freeman raped Maya at the age of eight then threatened to kill her brother if she said anything to anyone. After him and her mom got into a disagreement and he left she decided to tell and they went to court for it and he got sentenced but got out the day of and got killed the same day.
After Mr. Freeman got killed she thought everything was her fault so she went into a deep state of depression and talked to no one but Bailey and that made her moms side of the family that lived in St. Louis mad so they sent her back to Stamps where she went to a special teacher named Mrs.Flowers came along and made her talk again after almost a whole year without speaking to anyone but Bailey. Well not necessarily made her talk but showed her it was okay to talk.
