This picture represents the time when she was at a church revival and they were listening to the Joel Louis heavyweight championship and after he won against that white man she felt as if African Americans could accomplish anything.
When Maya was 10 she got a job working for a White lady and she didn't think much of her until she began to call Maya "Mary" For her own liking and Mary wasn't to fond of that and she tried to quit but her grandmother wouldn't let her so Maya decided to take it upon her own power to drop the woman's dish to get fired.
At the age of thirteen her family moved back in with their Mom first in California then in Oakland, Ohio then when she married her NEW boyfriend " Daddy Clidell " they call him they moved to San Fransisco. Her and Bailey went to see her dad and his girlfriend one summer and got into a fight with her dads girlfriend and she cut Maya. So Maya took it upon herself and ran away and stays in a junk yard with others for about a month and when she got back home she felt extremely strong.
At the age of 16 Maya got pregnant and decided not to tell her mom nor her stepdad for nearly 8 months and STILL graduates from high school and the book comes to a closing as she is becoming confident about her new born baby boy. The main theme I got from this story is no matter what type of life you live you will have rough and bumpy roads to cross but if you believe you can ride over the struggles you will.
