Creon returns with the oracle's message: The plague will end when the murderer of Laius. Oedipus immediately swears to take action to find the murderer and save the city.
Oedipus sends for the blind prophet Tiresias to discover the truth about the murderer. Tiresias reveals that Oedipus is actually the murderer. Oedipus does not believe Tiresias and accuses Creon of conspiring with Tiresias to overthrow him as the ruler of Thebes.
Oedipus explains the circumstances to his wife Jocasta. She tells Oedipus that Tiresias is wrong and describes a prophecy about the murder of Laius as proof. However, this description makes Oedipus believe that he may have been the murderer after all.
Oedipus rejoices after hearing from a messenger that his father has died from natural causes. He believes this proves the prophecy wrong, however, the messenger reveals that this man is not his biological father.
