Darius and the Persians attacked Ionia and the people of Ionia began to cry for help to us, the Athenians. We have had problems before but nothing is too big to not help them. We sent boats of Athenians to Ionia to help them and the Persians ended up winning. Darius got extremely steamed up at the fact the Athenians came to help the Greeks.
Persians, along with Darius, closed in on the Athens on a plane in Marathon. They wanted revenge on them for helping the Greeks. The Athens used their formation called the phalanx, the Persians weapons and armor were no match for the Greeks and the Greeks ended up winning an unexpected battle.
Pheidippides ran from Marathon to Athens to deliver the news about Athens defeating the persians so they dont give up and then he died soon after. They soon called 26 miles a marathon
The battle of Thermopylae was fought because Darius's son Xerxes wanted revenge on the Athens for defeating his father 10 years earlier.

A traitor went to the Persians and told them a way to sneak up on the Greeks and gain their revenge, the Greeks were outnumbered and snuck up on the Persians and won
The Greeks can go while we the Spartans hold them off
